Before 1989 the iron curtain divided Germany as well as the whole of Europe in an Eastern part under Soviet rule and Western Europe as a part of the Western world. The German reunification in 1990 was the beginning of the reunification process of Europe which culminated in the enlargement of the European Union in 2004 and 2007.
The Point Alpha Academy invites journalists, politicians and representatives of German and east European business companies to discuss with scholars and experts benefits as well as difficulties and challenges of this process for Eastern Europe, Germany and the whole European Union. Moreover the seminar examines the common cultural heritage of Germany and Eastern Europe and asks for the experience and imprint communist dictatorship has left and whether it still has an impact on the EU’s politics. Furthermore the Point Alpha Academy wants to initiate a discussion concerning the expectations of the European integration process and the potential of a further enlargement of the EU.
In today’s multipolar world the EU’s enlargement process is not only about democratic reforms, it is also about international strategic partnership. The USA are still the most important partner of the EU. But with the growing importance of other regions of the world Europe also has to find a new role.
