#16 Alleestraße
Über 180 km erstreckt sich „Der Hochrhöner" als Fernwanderweg durch die Rhön. Dabei führt er durch drei Bundesländer: Bayern, Hessen und Thüringen. Die Tour startet in Bad Kissingen und führt über die höchsten Erhebungen des Mittelgebirges bis Bad Salzungen. Zusätzlich zu diesem Fernwanderweg entstanden entlang des Weges 21 Extratouren als Rundwanderwege, um gezielt einzelne Gebiete näher kennenzulernen.
Der „Point-Alpha-Weg" ist eine dieser Extratouren. Der Premiumwanderweg führt die Besucher entlang der ehemaligen innerdeutschen Grenze. Auf insgesamt 14,6 Kilometern gibt es viel Interessantes zu entdecken. Start des Weges ist der Geisaer Schlossplatz mit dem sanierten Schlossensemble. Im restaurierten Barockschloss hat die Point Alpha Stiftung ihren Sitz. Im Fürstlichen Schloss gibt es Übernachtungsmöglichkeiten. Vom Schlossplatz lohnt ein Abstecher zum Gangolfiberg mit den Resten des sogenannten Zentgerichts. Die einzige in Thüringen erhaltene mittelalterliche Gerichtsstätte ist über 1000 Jahre alt. Sehenswert ist weiterhin die Gangolfikapelle auf dem Friedhof mit ihrer Außenkanzel.
Der Point-Alpha-Weg führt von Geisa weiter über den Schlangenpfad - so genannt, weil er sich am Hang entlang schlängelt zum Bocksberg und von dort weiter zum Rockenstuhl. Auf dem Gipfel des Berges sind die Reste einer mittelalterlichen Burganlage zu finden. Vom Balkon der Schutzhütte hat man einen herrlichen Blick in die Hohe Rhön. Am Fuß des Berges steht das Kreuz der Geiserämter. Das fünf Meter hohe Kreuz wurde 2006 im Rahmen eines Mittelalterfestes errichtet. Unmittelbar neben dem Kreuz findet man eine Basaltfläche, auf welcher die geschleiften Höfe des Geisaer Amtes eingezeichnet sind. Die markierten Ansiedlungen wurden im Verlauf der Errichtung der DDR-Grenzanlagen dem Erdboden gleichgemacht und ihre Bewohner zwangsausgesiedelt. Vom Geiserämter Kreuz bietet sich ein beeindruckender Panoramablick ins Hessische Kegelspiel.
Am Ulsterblick erlaubt der Weg Einblicke ins Ulstertal. Über die Wiesenfelder Grotte, einer Lourdesgrotte mit Marienfigur, und den Geisaer Ortsteil Wiesenfeld führt der Weg zurück Richtung Geisa. Oberhalb der Stadt gelangt man zur Gedenkstätte Point Alpha. Am wahrscheinlich heißesten Punkt im Kalten Krieg steht eines der aussagefähigsten und authentischsten Grenzmuseen Deutschlands. Das Museum ist zweigeteilt. Im „Haus auf der Grenze" geht es um die Geschichte der deutschen Teilung und die DDR-Grenzanlagen. Über einen informativen Außenbereich mit einem Stück Mustergrenze gelangen die Besucher in den zweiten Teil der Gedenkstätte. Hier erfahren sie mehr über das Leben der amerikanischen Soldaten auf dem OP Alpha.
Von der Gedenkstätte führt der „Point-Alpha-Weg" zurück zum Ausgangspunkt Geisa.

The "Hochrhoener" is a long-distance trail through the Rhoen. It is 180 km long. It leads through the three federal states: Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia. The tour starts in Bad Kissingen and leads over the highest elevations of the low mountain range to Bad Salzungen. In addition to this long-distance footpath 21 extra tours were created that act as hiking trails to explore individual areas in a better way.
The Point Alpha trail is one of those extra trails. The premium hiking trail leads the visitors along the former inner-German border. On a total of 14.6 km, there are many interesting things to discover. The start of the trail is the "Schlossplatz" in Geisa with the renovated castle. The headquarter of the Point Alpha Foundation is in the restored Baroque palace. In the royal castle there is the possibility to stay. From "Schlossplatz" it is worth to walk to "Gangolfiberg" with the remains of the so-called centering court. This is the only medieval court in Thuringia which is in good condition and over 1.000 years old. Also worth seeing is the Gangolfi chapel in the cemetery with its external pulpit.
The Point Alpha trail leads along the "Schlangenpfad" to "Bocksberg" and from there to "Rockenstuhl". The path got its name because it winds along the slope. On the peak of the mountain the remains of a medieval castle can be found. From the balcony of the hut there is a magnificent view of the "Hohe Rhoen". At the foot of the mountain there is the cross of the "Geiserämter" The five-metre-high cross was erected in 2006 as part of a medieval feast. Next to the cross there is a basalt area, on which those houses are shown which were torn down. In the course of the erection of the GDR- border the marked settlements were totally destroyed and the inhabitants were forcibly resettled. From this cross there is a wonderful panoramic view to the Hessian Skittles.
On "Ulsterblick" the way gives a view to the "Ulstertal". The trail along Wiesenfeld grotto, a Lourdes grotto with a statue of Mary, and the village Wiesenfeld leads back to Geisa.
Above the town Geisa there is the way to the memorial Point Alpha. On probably the hottest place in the Cold War there is one of the most meaningful and authentic border museums in Germany. It is divided into two parts. There is a visitors'centre on the Thuringian side (Haus auf der Grenze – House on the border) , which informs about the German division and the inner-German border. There is also a strip of border protection systems of East Germany. The second part of the memorial is on the Hessian side and it houses an exhibition on the presence of American soldiers on the observation point – OP Alpha.
From the memorial the Point Alpha trail leads back to the starting point in Geisa.
